Biosphere Reserves “are territories whose objective is to harmonize the conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development through the relationship of people with nature. They are established in ecologically representative areas or areas of unique value, in terrestrial, coastal and marine environments, in which the integration of the human population and its activities with conservation is essential. In order to celebrate this twentieth anniversary, the El Hierro Biosphere Reserve is launching the #20años20reazones campaign. Throughout these months, and until November, 20 of the countless reasons why El Hierro was named a Biosphere Reserve in 2000 will be shared on Social Networks accompanied by the hashtag #20años20reazones. Associated with these reasons, various activities will be developed aimed at the local population, with the aim of raising awareness of the values of the Reserve and the importance it has in the socioeconomic development of the island. The first of these actions will be, as reported by the insular Minister of the Environment, Montserrat Gutiérrez, an open day to be held at the El Creal Environmental Center on August 8 and 9, in which the rich island flora, the work of the Environment area in its fight against invasive pests, an interpretive route will be carried out and talks will be given about the history and traditional uses in the rural environment of El Hierro, among others. The campaign will end on November 3, coinciding with the International Day of Biosphere Reserves.
